There are so many factors that contribute to changing up your routine or product selections. Maybe it’s hair growth since your hair grows at different length stages. Maybe it’s time since the amount of time you have available or choose to spend on your hair will affect your practices and how you style. Maybe it’s financial since you may opt to have your hair maintained by a salon or if not, the cost of product you purchase. Raising children, Running a business, Repositioning lifestyle, so many things. For me, I believe it’s been a mixture of mostly all of the above. The most significant being hair growth. As my hair continues to grow, it’s had a different reaction to several products. Today, I’d like to shared what I currently do to my hair. Of course, I’ll periodically post an update on products I use on a regular basis as well as my routine.
To be perfectly honest, there was a point when I was a complete product junkie! I was so keen on trying everything out there that targeted for naturally curly haired women. Being the artist I am in the kitchen, one of the first things I did after growing out my natural curls was make homemade hair spritz. Mainly because I knew I wanted to use my own Satinique product line because I was already comfortable with how they worked on my hair. I’ve tried countless products. There were some I’ve tried adding to my regimen, and lots of others I would never let touch my hair again! I even substituted other conditioners to create my daily spritz or even salon leave-in conditioners, just hoping these mists really did promise moisture. Yet I found that after using many of these products (and giving them a good 30 day commitment), my hair would scream for what it loved most so I’d got back to using it. Of course this continued on with the same back and forth insanity happening with my shampoos, conditioners, oils, finishing sprays, and curl creams butter until I made a decision. The light bulb finally went off that my hair appeared happy with certain rudiments…why not just stick to them? Don’t’ get me wrong, I’m definitely not saying I’m never trying new products again, from time to time I still experiment, however I realize now that the following are what my hair love for certain.
Here’s What I Use:
- I wash my hair every week – alternating with Satinique’s Smooth Moisture Shampoo and with the same brand conditioner as a co-wash. I’m so committed to the Satinique brand right now and I often switch in between systems based on my mood whether it’s Extra Volume or Color Repair.
- I deep condition with Satinique’s Revitalizing Mask or Overnight Repair Treatment. Sometimes I use these together depending on what my hair challengers are at that particular time, if anything at all. I’m so IN LOVE with the ingredients…I mean “grape seed extract” and “kukui seed oil” both of which work together for the sole purpose of literally rejuvenating dry and dull hair not to mention enhancing from environmental stress (who’s feeling me on the crazy humidity here in the DMV). This works as a great detangler also.
- For slicker styles or to lay my hair down, I like the Satinique Straightening Balm or the Texturing Matte Wax. Of course, to keep my hair looking shiny and hydrated, I finish off with the Dual Defend Spray. None of these cause flakes or extreme build up, plus they have a nice moisturizing feel to them. As you’ve probably already notice, I love brushing my hair back into a ponypuff or a topbun, well now you know how I get those looks – more on that later. Here’s a tip: a little goes a long way.
- I can’t talk about my Homemade Daily Spritz enough (see Recipes) but I usually spritz my hair twice daily – in the morning before removing my twists. Then I spray again in the evening before I re-twist, place on my satin scarf and go to bed, but it all depends on the style therefore sometimes I’ll prep my hair while it’s dry then spritz as a finishing touch. Spritzing helps keep my hair moisturized and acts as a refreshner for my curls.
- Most times, I use either extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil to seal moisture after my normal wash routine. Other times I like the Satinique Shine Spray because it contains argon oil (which I completely adore) and is lightweight. Whenever I feel my hair needs to retain moisture during the week, I’ll sometimes massage this through my hair or even on my scalp. Occasionally I will use it on my edges to soften them, especially when I’m taking a breather gel use.
